Description

How to Use ND Filters: Beyond the Basics

The NiSi 95mm Variable Neutral Density 0.45 to 1.5 Filter is a solid variable neutral density filter that is designed to mount onto lenses with 95mm front filter threads and provides an exposure reduction of 1.5 to 5 stops. The 0.45 to 1.5 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. The degree of density is easily controlled by rotating the front filter ring, helping you to predetermine the additional exposure length required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. For easier, repeatable control over density settings, the front ring is visually demarcated with dots representing different density values and includes a rotation lever to further enable fast and precise positioning of the front ring.

This filter is constructed from optical glass for clarity and color fidelity. Each glass surface includes one layer of nano coating that helps to prevent reflections as well as glare. To enable use with other filters, the front ring features 95mm filter threads which also help to reduce the likelihood of vignetting when used with wide-angle lenses.

It can be applied to darken bright skies, specifically during a sunrise or sunset, while allowing for a normal, unaffected exposure in the other regions of the image. This filter achieves its effect with a 0.9 band of density across its center region that provides a 3-stop reduction in light from entering a lens. This band extends approximately 4mm in both vertical directions which tapers to a 0.15 density that provides a 0.5-stop reduction in light at the edge above it. Directly below the 0.9 band of density, it tapers to clear, with a hard-edged line of transition before the clear area. The placement of a 0.9 band of density that tapers to a density of 0.15 above it with a clear area directly below, allows the NiSi 100 x 150mm Nano Reverse-Graduated IRND 0.9 to 0.15 Filter to match the positioning of the sun when it is at, or immediately above the horizon. In such instances, the sun can appear closer to the center of an image as opposed to the upper edge, and an increase in brightness is created that is more prominent on both sides of the sun than above it. This pattern of brightness corresponds to the density pattern on the NiSi 100 x 150mm Nano Hard-Edge Reverse-Graduated IRND 0.9 to 0.15 Filter. The hard-edged line of transition in this reverse, graduated neutral density filter is useful for hard transitions between the sky and land, while the 3-stop to 0.5-stop gradation is applicable to multiple regions of brightness within the sky.
  • Compatible with filter holders that can accommodate 2mm-thick, 100 x 150mm rectangular filters

How to Use ND Filters: An IntroductionThe NiSi 100x150mm Nano Soft-Edge Graduated IRND 0.9 Filter is a rectangular filter that helps to darken specific areas of an image, such as bright skies, while allowing for a normal, unaffected exposure in the other regions of the image. The filter is densest at the edge and tapers to clear by the middle, with a soft-edged line of transition between the dense and clear areas. A neutral density filter with a soft-edged line of transition is particularly useful for images that do not have a strongly defined transition between the sky and the foreground. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and this filter provides up to a 3-stop reduction in light from entering the lens. The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and to promote nearly flat attenuation of visible and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. To provide a high level of neutrality across the visible and infrared spectrums to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks when using the NiSi 100 x 150mm Nano Soft-Edge Graduated IRND 0.9 Filter, one layer of NiSi Optical Nano Coating is applied to each of this filter's surfaces. The Nano coating associated with this filter also results in an improved beading effect when in contact with water or oil for greater cleaning efficiency. This NiSi 100x150mm Nano Soft-Edge Graduated IRND 0.9 Filter is constructed from optical glass for clarity as well as color fidelity, and measures 2mm thick.100x150mm graduated neutral density filter darkens bright areas of an image, such as skies, while leaving the remainder of the frame unaffected.8x filter factor provides up to a 3-stop reduction of light in selective areas.Soft-edged line of transition between the dense and clear areas.Useful for images that do not have a strongly defined transition between the sky and the foreground.Filter does not affect coloration of the image and is ideal for use with other filters. Each surface includes one layer of NiSi Optical Nano Coating that attenuates infrared light as well as visible wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure times.Nano coating provides an improved beading effect with water or oil for more efficient cleaning.Constructed from optical glass for clarity.Leatherette pouch included for storage and transport. How to Use ND Filters: Beyond the BasicsThe NiSi 100 x 100mm Nano IRND 4.5 Filter is an ND filter with a 32,000x filter factor that provides a 15-stop exposure reduction. Its 4.5 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Neutral density filters are intended to not affect the coloration of the image and are ideal for pairing with other filters. The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and to promote nearly flat attenuation of visible and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. To provide a high level of neutrality across the visible and infrared spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks when using the NiSi 100 x 100mm Nano IRND 4.5 Filter, one layer of NiSi Optical Nano Coating is applied to each of this filter's surfaces. The Nano coating associated with this filter also results in an improved beading effect when in contact with water or oil for greater cleaning efficiency. This NiSi 100 x 100mm Nano IRND 4.5 Filter is constructed from optical glass for clarity as well as color fidelity, and measures 2mm thick.100 x 100mm neutral density filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.Providing a 15-stop exposure reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.Filter does not affect coloration of the image and is ideal for use with other filters. The 100mm System Filter Case V2 from NiSi is designed to provide a secure and convenient transport and storage solution for up to eight NiSi 100 x 100mm or 100 x 150mm filters. Filters placed within the NiSi 100mm System Filter Case are each held within one of eight nonabrasive slots. This rigid filter case features a leatherette exterior and magnetic closure. The NiSi 100mm System Filter Case's integrated shoulder strap or belt clip can be used to keep its contents within immediate reach. The NiSi 100 x 100mm Natural-Night Filter is designed to reduce the appearance of light pollution in images or video that include the night sky and illumination from artificial light sources. This effect can be obtained when this filter is used on a film camera system with daylight film installed, or on a digital camera system with its daylight white balance setting selected.Light pollution occurs in areas of the night sky that are above or near concentrated and intense sources of artificial light such as cities. These light sources can include exterior and interior lamps for commercial or residential buildings, brightly lit advertisements such as billboards, streetlamps, as well as sports and entertainment venues. Together, they can result in a type of light pollution known as skyglow, where individual stars, the Milky Way, and other astronomical features in the night sky are obscured. Additionally, artificial lights clustered together can become difficult to individually discern. Light pollution from these "cluttered" sources can become a source of distraction within an image and can resemble overexposed areas of glare. When used, the NiSi 100 x 100mm Natural-Night Filter can improve the results of nighttime images by blocking the yellow light from sodium-vapor lamps, mercury-vapor lamps, or low Color Rendering Index LED's, common light sources within urban areas. By preventing the dominant wavelengths of light associated with the color of those lamps from being recorded, the visibility of astronomical objects is enhanced, and where they appear, artificial light sources are more clearly defined with less glare and improved contrast. This filter is compatible with filter holders that can accommodate 2mm-thick, 100 x 100mm rectangular filters and is constructed from optical glass for clarity as well as color fidelity. Each glass surface includes one layer of nano coating. The nano coating associated with this filter results in an improved beading effect when in contact with water or oil for greater cleaning efficiency.A leatherette pouch is included with this filter for storage and transport.
